LASER TATTOO REMOVAL FAQs

WE HAVE THE ANSWERS TO THE MOST FREQUENTLY ASKED LASER TATTOO REMOVAL QUESTIONS

Starting your Laser Tattoo Removal journey can be daunting without all the answers to your questions. We are here to help you find all the information you need to make the best decision for you and your tattoo.

DOES LASER TATTOO REMOVAL HURT?

Most clients find laser tattoo removal treatments not overly uncomfortable or unbearable. The experience is described as the continual flicking of a rubber band onto the skin. The location of the tattoo on the body determines how much discomfort there is during the treatment. The more sensitive the skin area, the greater the discomfort level during treatment. The majority of the discomfort ends immediately at the end of the laser tattoo removal treatment.

To assist with your pain management should you require it, you’ll be offered extended pain relief with Topical Dermal Anaesthetic Cream in addition to the standard cooling method using the Zimmer Cryo6 Cold Air Device. This device is used before, during and after the process to maintain skin comfort during treatment.

HOW MUCH DOES LASER TATTOO REMOVAL COST?

NO TWO TATTOOS ARE THE SAME AND NO TWO CLIENTS ARE THE SAME.

That is why we tailor our Laser Tattoo Removal Programs individually for every client. Whether a full removal is required, a fade for a cover up or the removal of a misplaced comma, we will create an individual program and honour the agreed price throughout your Laser Tattoo Removal journey.

DOES LASER TATTOO REMOVAL BURN THE SKIN?

ABSOLUTELY NOT. The laser tattoo removal treatment does not ‘burn’ the skin or the tattoo to effect removal. At Disappear, we utilise the world’s best laser system for laser tattoo removal, the Quanta Systemens Discovery PICO Laser System. The laser energy actually shatters the ink particles in the tattoo into tiny micro-fragments. These micro-fragments are then carried away from the tattoo site by the body’s own lymphatic system.

HOW SUCCESSFUL IS LASER TATTOO REMOVAL?

VERY SUCCESSFUL, just check out our Images.
Tattoos are designed to be permanent. That means they are not simple to remove, however they are not impossible to remove either, especially when the world’s best laser system is used.

There are two main types of tattoos; The Amateur Tattoo and the Professional Multi-Coloured Tattoo. The single colour, Amateur Tattoo usually responds extremely well to laser tattoo removal treatment. Professional Multi-Coloured Tattoos are more difficult to remove as you would expect. The level of difficulty is dependent on the colours of the tattoo, ink compositions used in the tattoo and the depth of the embedded inks in the skin. Black, blue and red colours in the tattoo are not overly difficult to remove as they readily absorb laser energy. However green, yellow and purple pigments require special attention and the Quanta Systems Discovery PICO Laser System is specifically designed to target these colours in Professional Tattoos.

Best results are achieved when treatments are spaced six to eight weeks apart as the natural process of the body removing the micro-fragments of ink particles is on-going despite the ‘look’ on the surface that nothing is happening. Treating a tattoo earlier than six weeks does not speed the process of removal.

WHY SO MANY TREATMENTS?

Disappear Laser Clinic + Tattoo Removal follows the ‘Less is More’ principle and we do not take unnecessary short-cuts with our clients. We also utilise the world’s best laser system for laser tattoo removal, the Quanta Systems Discovery PICO Laser System. This system does not ‘burn’ the skin or the tattoo to effect removal. The laser energy actually shatters the ink particles in the tattoo into very tiny micro fragments. These micro-fragments are then carried away from the tattoo site by the body’s own lymphatic system. This shattering effect and natural dispersal result in less ink at the tattoo site and so there is a gradual, but noticeable fading of the tattoo. Some tattoos may respond to as few as two treatments but most usually require between four to eight treatments to be completely removed.

HOW MANY TREATMENTS CAN I EXPECT?

Some tattoos may respond to as few as two (2) treatments but most usually require between six (6) to ten (10) treatments to be completely removed. Some multi-coloured professional tattoos with unique inks, colours and frosting techniques may require from ten (10) to fourteen (14) treatments. The total number depends on the location of the tattoo, the amount of ink in the tattoo, how deep the tattoo is in the skin, whether it was a professional or amateur tattoo, your overall health and fitness and other factors as well. Your Disappear Laser Clinician will assess your tattoo and quote the expected number of laser tattoo removal treatments. Should more treatments be required beyond the original number, these treatments will be free of charge. For us it’s all about Incredible Service and Incredible Results.

DO YOU OFFER EYEBROW TATTOO REMOVAL?

YES WE DO! We specialise in Eyebrow Tattoo Removal. Our Discovery Pico+ Laser System safely removes the ink in eyebrow tattoos without damaging the delicate eyebrow hair and without scarring the skin. And YES, after Eyebrow Tattoo Removal you can have new eyebrows tattooed, micro-bladed or feathered. The choice is yours.

HOW SOON CAN I HAVE A NEW TATTOO REMOVED?

Many people get a tattoo on the weekend and then on Monday want it removed. Unfortunately, the tattoo has to be allowed to fully heal first before laser tattoo removal can begin. Healing takes between 8 to 12 weeks. This way the skin fully recovers and the tattoo ink settles. Once healed, the laser tattoo removal treatment can do its job. Treating a tattoo before it is fully healed can lead to scarring and skin discolouration, so for a good removal outcome – patience is paramount.

CAN I HAVE MY TATTOO FADED FOR RE-DOING?

YES ABSOLUTELY! We can treat your tattoo to fade it to a point that your favourite tattoo artist can re-work the area and create a new work of art. Check out this article showing our fading work.

CAN I TATTOO OVER AN AREA WHERE I'VE HAD LASER?

YES, ABSOLUTELY. Remember, it’s OK to Change Your Mind. Many of our clients visit us specifically to have a tattoo removed or partially removed so a brand new one, more modern one or just simply fantastic one can take pride of place in your life.

CAN I HAVE A PART OF MY TATTOO REMOVED?

SURE – Many of our clients come to us for laser tattoo removal to remove parts of their tattoos that need to be replaced, re-worked or just removed. So we can help you trim or clean up your tattoo as you require.

WHY 8 OR MORE WEEKS BETWEEN TREATMENTS?

Best results are achieved when treatments are spaced eight or more weeks apart. The natural process of the body’s lymphatic system removing the micro-fragments of ink particles is on-going even though the ‘look’ on the surface seems that nothing is happening. Treating a tattoo earlier than eight weeks does not speed up the process of laser tattoo removal. It simply makes the client feel better and the clinic richer. Read our Tips for Improving Your Fading.

ARE THERE SIDE EFFECTS?

Not usually. The most common complication following laser tattoo removal treatment is an increase in natural skin pigment. This increased pigment in the skin only lasts a relatively short length of time, usually three months, before it disappears spontaneously. This is more likely to happen in people who tan relatively easily.

Permanent whitening of the skin can occur following laser tattoo removal treatment and this is more common if a very high energy level is used, for instance, with the Ruby laser. However, in most people, the whitening of the skin is just a short-lived phenomenon, which recovers spontaneously over some weeks. Check out our Gallery to see our results.

WHAT PAIN RELIEF CAN BE OFFERED TO ME?

To assist with your pain management during laser tattoo removal, should you require it, you’ll be offered extended pain relief with a Topical Dermal Anaesthetic Cream in addition to the standard cooling method using the Zimmer Cryo6 Cold Air Device. This device is used before, during and after the process to maintain skin comfort during treatment.

Following the laser tattoo removal treatment, the treated area feels like it is mildly sunburnt and it will be cooled further by your Clinician. Should you need additional pain relief for the discomfort, we recommend taking your favourite oral pain relief medication.

OK, SO AFTER THE LASER TREATMENT WHAT'S NEXT?

Following each laser tattoo removal treatment, the After Care procedure is extremely important to achieve the best outcome. It is extremely important to follow these steps carefully each time at home after a laser tattoo removal treatment:

  • Following treatment, the skin will be cooled using the Zimmer Cryo 6 machine. The Disappear Ink Tattoo Removal Clinician will do this immediately and throughout the process as well as after the treatment.
  • Avoid excessive heat on the skin surface (avoid exercise, hot baths, showers, saunas etc for 24- 48 hours after treatment)
  • DO NOT expose the treated area to the sun
  • Use SPF 30+ when in the sun as well as protective clothing for the duration of your Laser Tattoo Removal treatments.
  • Do not pick or scratch the treated area.
  • Avoid any injury to the skin.
  • The treated area may feel slightly sunburned. Cold packs can be applied as needed for the discomfort. This will pass quickly.
  • The treated area may remain red and puffy for a number of days depending on skin types. This is normal and will settle down to normal.
  • It is very common to develop an itching sensation in the treated area even weeks after treatment. This is the body removing the shattered pigment microparticles from the skin. The itching sensation is caused by the microparticles moving through the skin. Again, this is perfectly normal. PLEASE AVOID SCRATCHING.
  • If applying an antiseptic cream to the area does not decrease the itching sensation, then a 1% Hydrocortisone ointment or cream may be applied.

DOES THE SUN IMPACT MY TREATMENT?

YES IT DOES. Just like when you first had your tattoo inked, you should not expose the treated area to the Sun where possible and ensure that when you are in the Sun (where it’s unavoidable) you should always use a broad spectrum SPF 30+ block-out as well as protective clothing for the duration of your Laser Tattoo Removal treatments.
