The short answer to the question is NOWHERE NEAR AS MUCH AS YOU THINK!
It must be remembered that your tattoo was designed to be permanent. A piece of ink artwork is supposed to last a lifetime. In fact, having the tattoo inked in the first place is painful, so why do people thinking about tattoo removal ask ‘Does Laser tattoo Removal Hurt?’
The simple reason that people ask the question is that they do not know about the PROCESS of Laser Tattoo Removal.
Laser Tattoo Removal works by having a pulse of laser light aimed at the ink of your tattoo. The ink absorbs the laser pulse and shatters into smaller particles that can pass through the skin, thus fading your tattoo. It is this shattering of the ink that causes the discomfort felt during Laser Tattoo Removal.
There is some discomfort during the treatment, however most Laser Tattoo Removal treatments take less than 15 minutes which is only a fraction of the time the tattoo required to be inked in the first place.
Not all laser systems are the same just as all tattoo artists aren’t the same. A Class 4 medical grade laser system is an absolute must for successful Laser Tattoo Removal.
At Disappear Ink we use and recommend the Quanta Systems Discovery PICO laser system, the world’s best ink removal system.
An experienced, well-trained laser clinician, using a Class 4 medical-grade tattoo removal laser system in conjunction with a cold air machine will provide a treatment at around 7 out of 10 on the Discomfort Scale. That discomfort level drops to 4 or 5 when a numbing cream like EMLA or NUMIT, is applied 45 minutes before the treatment. Once the laser treatment is completed, the discomfort level drops to down to a 2 or 3 within five minutes.
At Disappear Ink we always use a Zimmer Cryo 6 cooling machine to chill the tattoo and surrounding skin. The machine pumps cold air onto the skin to help numb the area. The cold air numbs the tattoo area and the discomfort felt is minimal. In fact, most of our clients tell us that as soon as the laser treatment is finished, there is no residual discomfort or pain afterwards.
Some Laser Tattoo Removal treatments hurt more than others and need additional pain relief because of their location on the body.
Ribs, feet, wrists and other sensitive areas need a topical anaesthetic cream. At Disappear Ink we recommend and use NUMIT, a lignicaine based anaesthetic cream. Even when anaesthetic cream is applied, we still treat the tattoo area with the Zimmer Cryo 6 cooling machine throughout the whole treatment.
